Round Rock ISD is proud to announce 79 seniors throughout our district who have been named 2027 National Merit Scholars Semifinalists. These semifinalists can continue in the competition for roughly 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth about $24 million, offered in the spring.
High school counselors are always on the lookout for great opportunities like the National Merit Scholarship to provide for their students.
“This opportunity can be truly life-changing for students and their families,” said Holly Browning, lead counselor at Westwood High School. “One of my favorite things is seeing a student’s dreams come within reach because of the financial support made possible through the National Merit program. It’s a powerful reminder of how hard work, opportunity and support can come together to change a student’s future.”
These seniors first entered this program as juniors, taking either the 2025 Preliminary SAT or the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. From over 16,000 semifinalists, more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and they will be notified in February.
In spring 2027, three types of National Merit Scholarships will be available. All Finalists can compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships, awarded based on each state’s representation. Around 700 scholarships will be sponsored by about 120 corporations and businesses for Finalists who meet specific criteria, such as being children of employees or residents in areas where the sponsors have offices or plants. Additionally, about 140 colleges and universities are expected to offer around 3,500 scholarships for Finalists who plan to attend their school.
